    Notes:

    Birth:
    Mar Q 1924 1d 1887 Woolwich

    Buried:
A funeral service for him was held at 'The Hastings Fisherman's Museum', Hastings, East Sussex, on 1st March and he was due to be buried at sea later that day.
However, due to bad weather, his burial did not actually take place until a few days later. The area where he was buried is one of only five permissible burial grounds at sea in the English Channel.
John did serve in the Royal Navy, as did his father (my grandfather),and in the late 1960's he was an Auxiliary Coastguard at Fairlight (keeping watch on the area where he is now buried.
He also kept watch on the 'Firehills' overlooking Rye Bay and Hastings.
In his younger days he helped restore, in part ownership, a large cutter sailing ship called the 'Marigold' in Rye, which has gone on to be a Classic Ship of its day (see www.marigold1892.co.uk )
He also helped a friend and colleague, Jeff Larkby, build his own sailing yacht in Rye harbour from where they sailed across to France on numerous occasions in it.
A true man of the sea!

    Notes:

Woolwich Dockyard was an English naval dockyard founded by King Henry VIII in 1512 to build his flagship Henri Grace a Dieu (Great Harry), the largest ship of its day.

Like its counterpart at Deptford, it was probably chosen for its position - on the south bank of the tidal River Thames conveniently close to Henry's palace at Greenwich.

By the mid 18th-century, Woolwich was the fifth largest dockyard in the country (after Portsmouth, Plymouth, Deptford, and Chatham). It employed just over 700 men and specialised in heavy repair and building work.

Its facilities ultimately included two large dry docks, a substantial basin (now used by local anglers), numerous storehouses, a gatehouse and clockhouse, gun bastions, and, in later years, a large metal-working factory used to produce anchors and other iron items used in ship-building.

As ships grew bigger and the Thames began to silt up, the dockyard eventually closed in 1869, but some of its features still remain, while Woolwich Dockyard railway station reminds commuters of the history of the area.
